Routine Examination

A prostate examination is simple to perform and causes little discomfort. It is performed by having a man either bend over a table or position himself on a table on his hands and knees. The physician or nurse places a rubber glove on their hand followed by lubrication on the index finger. The finger is then gently inserted into the rectum. In addition to examining the prostate for prostate enlargement or prostate cancer, the rectum can be examined for possible colon tumors. The normal exam should take 15-30 seconds.
