 High Intensity Focused Ultrasound

The newest option for treating localized prostate cancer is called HIFU, or high intensity focused ultrasound. It uses ultrasound waves to heat the prostate to very high temperatures which have the potential to kill cancer cells. This treatment is not currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, however, but it is still being promoted by some doctors.
